Utrecht and Gouda
Founded by the Romans in AD47, Utrecht enjoyed its greatest prosperity in the 16th and 17th centuries, when many of its magnificent canalside houses were built. Its compact centre is perfect for exploring on foot – key sights include the Centraal Museum, 15th century St Catherine’s Convent, Cathedral Tower and the Oudegracht Canal lined with old warehouses, many of which have been converted into restaurants and galleries. Elsewhere, the Rietvald Schroder house, an UNESCO World Heritage site, is a 1920’s Modernist gem designed by Gerrit Rietvald, whilst the National Railway Museum is an atmospheric journey into the golden age of railways and well worth visiting.

Amsterdam
One of Europe’s great cities, the city of Amsterdam is renowned for its canals lined with beautiful merchants’ houses, wonderful museums and relaxed atmosphere. There is a wealth of sights including the intensely moving Ann Frank’s house, Flower Market, the canals such as Herrengracht and Singel, Westerkerk Church and a host of world class museums. A wonderful new addition to the art of the city is the opening of the Hermitage Museum, housing for 2010 a superb collection of late 19th and 20th century art with works by Picasso, Matisse, Braque and many more, housed in a beautiful 17th century mansion.

Kroller Muller Museum and Het Loo Palace
The wonderful Kroller-Muller Museum, which owes its existence to the vision of its founder Helene Kroller-Muller (and the wealth of her industrialist husband) who started her collection of modern art in 1906. Donated to the state in 1935, the museum was built to house the collection and boasts 278 works by Van Gogh (not all on show), works by Monet, Manet, Mondrian, Picasso and Cézanne as well as a beautiful sculpture garden. Its location is no less impressive, in the midst of a beautiful national park – the energetic can borrow one of their famous white bicycles to reach the museum from the park entrance. Today’s tour also includes a visit to the stunning 17th century royal palace of Het Loo, the summer residence of the Orange family and often compared to Versailles. Highlights here include the beautiful formal gardens and ornate interiors such as William III’s bedroom and marble-clad dining hall.

Arnhem and the Open-air Museum
Arnhem is famous as the location for the failed Operation Market Garden and “A Bridge too Far.” Virtually destroyed in WWII, it has now been rebuilt to its former glory and is an attractive market town with some notable sights including the Eusebiuskerk and 16th century Duivelshuis. Just outside town is the superb open-air Museum (entrance included) which illustrates Dutch provincial life through the ages in a beautiful parkland setting serviced by vintage trams.
